Ma Mambaul Hikam Berkunjung ke FMIPA UM

Malang, 8 Oktober 2024 – Kunjungan MA Mambaul Hikam ke FMIPA Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) bertujuan untuk menjalin kerja sama dalam pendidikan. Aula FMIPA UM dipadati ratusan siswa dan belasan guru dari MA Mambaul Hikam. Kunjungan ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kesempatan bagi siswa untuk melanjutkan pendidikan di FMIPA UM.

Rombongan MA Mambaul Hikam dipimpin oleh Kepala Madrasah, H. Riza Rifqy, M.Pd. Ia menyatakan, “Kami berharap siswa-siswi terbuka wawasan dan bisa mewujudkan serta termotivasi impiannya untuk melanjutkan studi di FMIPA UM.” Pernyataan ini menunjukkan harapan besar dari pihak madrasah untuk membantu siswa mencapai cita-cita mereka.

Kedatangan MA Mambaul Hikam disambut oleh Wakil Dekan III FMIPA UM, Prof. Dr. Sentot Kusairi, S.Pd., M.Si. Dalam sambutannya, beliau mengatakan, “Kegiatan ini bisa menjadi implementasi kerja sama antara FMIPA UM dan MA Mambaul Hikam.” Ujar Prof. Sentot, menekankan pentingnya kolaborasi ini.

Selama kunjungan, salah satu siswa MA Mambaul Hikam, Kak Hilda, mengajukan pertanyaan, “Apa keunggulan Fakultas FMIPA dibandingkan universitas lain?” Prof. Sentot menjawab, “Presentase lembaga pendidikan kami sangat baik. Kami memiliki 250 dosen, termasuk 30 profesor dari luar negeri. Selain itu, 20% dari staf kami adalah profesor, dan kami juga mendapatkan pendanaan dari pemerintah untuk riset.”

Kunjungan ini diakhiri dengan sesi foto bersama dan pemberian cinderamata dari MA Mambaul Hikam kepada FMIPA UM. Dengan adanya kunjungan ini, diharapkan akan semakin banyak siswa yang tertarik untuk melanjutkan pendidikan di FMIPA.

Selain itu, FMIPA UM berkomitmen untuk terus mendukung dan memfasilitasi siswa dalam mencapai impian mereka. Diharapkan kerjasama ini tidak hanya terbatas pada kunjungan, tetapi juga mencakup program-program lain seperti workshop dan seminar yang dapat meningkatkan pengetahuan siswa.

Melalui interaksi ini, FMIPA UM berharap dapat membangun hubungan yang lebih erat dengan MA Mambaul Hikam, sehingga kedua institusi dapat saling mendukung dalam pengembangan pendidikan. Semoga, ke depannya, lebih banyak siswa dari MA Mambaul Hikam dapat melanjutkan studi dan berkontribusi di dunia pendidikan sains.

Kunjungan UM dan UTM ke Konservasi Mangrove Pulau Kukup

Departemen Pendidikan Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) melakukan kunjungan ke Pulau Kukup, Johor Bahru, Malaysia pada 7 September. Kegiatan ini diikuti oleh 2 dosen dan 13 mahasiswa dari UM, serta 2 dosen dan 8 mahasiswa dari Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Tujuan utama dari kegiatan ini adalah untuk meningkatkan kesadaran akan pentingnya pelestarian lingkungan, terutama ekosistem bakau, yang merupakan salah satu penyangga utama ekosistem pesisir.

Pulau Kukup adalah salah satu konservasi mangrove terbesar di dunia yang tidak berpenghuni. Pulau ini memiliki ekosistem unik yang sangat penting bagi kelestarian lingkungan global. Selama kunjungan, para peserta diajak untuk melihat secara langsung bagaimana ekosistem mangrove berfungsi sebagai habitat bagi berbagai spesies hewan laut dan burung migran. Selain itu, mereka juga diberikan penjelasan mendalam tentang peran penting mangrove dalam mengurangi dampak perubahan iklim melalui penyerapan karbon dioksida (CO2).

Untuk menuju ke Pulau Kukup, para peserta menaiki perahu dari pelabuhan terdekat. Setibanya di pulau, mereka mengikuti tur yang dipandu oleh pemandu lokal yang memiliki keahlian dalam ekosistem mangrove dan budaya setempat. Pemandu tersebut menjelaskan keanekaragaman hayati di pulau dan tantangan yang dihadapi dalam upaya pelestarian mangrove.

Konservasi mangrove di Pulau Kukup berkontribusi terhadap beberapa tujuan pembangunan berkelanjutan (SDGs), terutama SDG 13 tentang tindakan terhadap perubahan iklim dan SDG 14 mengenai kehidupan di bawah air. Mangrove tidak hanya berperan penting dalam mitigasi perubahan iklim dengan menyerap karbon, tetapi juga menjadi habitat bagi berbagai spesies laut yang krusial untuk menjaga keseimbangan ekosistem pesisir.

Dengan adanya kunjungan ini, diharapkan para peserta dapat memahami lebih dalam tentang pentingnya pelestarian mangrove dan menerapkan pengetahuan ini di lingkungan masing-masing. Kegiatan semacam ini juga diharapkan dapat membangun kolaborasi antara institusi pendidikan dan meningkatkan kesadaran masyarakat tentang isu lingkungan yang mendesak.

COMMUNITY SERVICE: Biotechnology FMIPA UM consist of lecturers and students train empowerment and fFamily welfare women to make mushroom medium from bagasse.

The community service team from Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) has long been dedicated to empowering rural communities through innovative and sustainable practices. The training session in Kebonduren Village, which focused on creating mushroom medium from bagasse, is a prime example of this commitment. Bagasse, a byproduct of sugarcane processing, has been largely overlooked despite its potential. By teaching local women how to repurpose it into a valuable resource, the team not only addressed a waste management issue but also provided the community with a new source of income.

During the training, the participants learned about the nutritional benefits of mushrooms and the economic advantages of cultivating them. Mushrooms are rich in protein, fiber, and essential nutrients, making them a healthy addition to the local diet. The women were shown step-by-step how to prepare the bagasse as a growing medium, inoculate it with mushroom spores, and maintain the ideal conditions for growth. The hands-on approach ensured that each participant could confidently replicate the process at home.

In addition to the practical training, the session included discussions on the broader implications of their work. The team emphasized how this initiative aligns with global efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By reducing waste, promoting sustainable agriculture, and fostering economic growth, the project supports the community in multiple ways. The women expressed their excitement about the potential to turn this new skill into a small business, which could significantly impact their families’ livelihoods.

Looking ahead, Ratna Juwita Ph.D and her team plan to continue supporting the women of Kebonduren Village. They aim to provide further guidance on business development, marketing, and scaling up production. The ultimate goal is to create a sustainable and profitable enterprise that can serve as a model for other rural communities. With the skills and knowledge gained from the training, the women of Kebonduren Village are now better equipped to contribute to their local economy while also promoting environmental sustainability. The positive survey feedback has encouraged the team to expand similar training sessions to other villages in the region, ensuring that more communities can benefit from these innovative approaches.

FMIPA UM Trains Indonesian Migrant Workers in Taiwan on Brewing Tea from Local Fruits to Support SDGs

The Community Service Team from Universitas Negeri Malang (UM), represented by the Biotechnology Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Science, has gone beyond borders by conducting training abroad. This time, the training focused on making fruit tea from local Indonesian fruits as a ready-to-drink beverage at the Indonesian Economic and Trade Office (KDEI) in Taipei, Taiwan.

The event took place directly at KDEI Taipei last Sunday (21/7) and was attended by KDEI representatives Novrizal from the field of protection of Indonesian citizens and cultural-social information, as well as Muhammad Reza Dharmawan from KDEI administration and Indonesian Migrant Workers (TKI) who are part of the Community Learning Activity Center (PKBM) of the Indonesian Student Association (PPI) Taiwan.

The event began with a welcome speech by the principal of PKBM PPI Taiwan, Ir. Ananda Insan Firdausy, ST., MT., M.Sc. Ananda stated that PKBM PPI Taiwan is an institution engaged in non-formal education through package programs, allowing migrant workers to continue their education in Taiwan. “This training aligns with the programs at PKBM PPI Taiwan related to community empowerment, which involves providing training for PKBM PPI Taiwan students, consisting of migrant workers,” he explained. This activity supports SDGs 3, 7, 8, and 15.

Fruit tea training using local Indonesian fruits was chosen because of the abundance and variety of fruits available. However, their use has been limited to fresh consumption and some are dried for chips. During the harvest season, the quantity is abundant and the price is low. Therefore, the Community Service Team from Universitas Negeri Malang, led by Ratna Juwita, Ph.D., innovated by turning them into fruit tea, a ready-to-drink beverage rich in nutrients and vitamins, especially vitamins A and C. “We hope that this fruit tea-making training will provide new ideas for migrant workers in entrepreneurship,” she said.

Jatimulyo, Lowokwaru, Malang — Tim pengabdian masyarakat (pengmas) Departemen Biologi FMIPA Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) yang diketuai oleh Prof. Dr. Sri Rahayu Lestari, M.Si. melaksanakan pengabdian dengan judul “Pemberdayaan Kelompok PKK RW 6 Kelurahan Jatimulyo, Kecamatan Lowokwaru Malang dengan Pelatihan Pembuatan Aged Garlic (Bawang Fermentasi) sebagai Upaya untuk Meningkatkan Kesehatan Masyarakat Melalui Pencegahan Penyakit Tekanan Darah Tinggi dan Perekonomian Masyarakat” pada Minggu (07/07/2024)

Tim pengabdian masyarakat ini melibatkan dosen, mahasiswa, dan alumni,” ungkap ketua Tim Pengmas. Pelatihan ini dirancang sebagai upaya strategis untuk meningkatkan kesehatan masyarakat dan mendorong perekonomian lokal. Ketua tim pengmas, Prof. Dr. Sri Rahayu Lestari, M.Si., memberikan presentasi ini secara langsung. Untuk membantu peserta pelatihan, selain melakukan demonstrasi pembuatan Aged Garlic, tim pengmas juga telah membuat leaflet yang berisi informasi tentang cara membuat Aged Garlic yang dikenal memiliki berbagai manfaat kesehatan, termasuk potensi dalam pencegahan tekanan darah tinggi.

The Biotechnology Study Program of the Department of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, State University of Malang, held a co-teaching session for the Bioinformatics course (BIOTUM6131) on June 6, 2024, with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatimah Binti Hashim as the guest lecturer. The event took place at Lecture Building A19, 1st floor, and was attended by biotechnology program students and those interested in bioinformatics.
This activity focuses on the use of Biorender application for creating effective visualizations of biochemical mechanisms or visualizing research methods and results. The session begins with an introduction to Biorender, covering its usage, benefits, and ease of utilizing this web-based software. After the presentation, students are encouraged to practice hands-on by creating Biorender accounts and attempting to visualize topics related to their research or understanding of biotechnology.
This co-teaching activity, through BioRender training, is expected to continually enhance students’ understanding through visualizations of micro- and nano-scale materials commonly found in biotechnology education. This activity can support the achievement of SDGs No. 4, which aims to improve quality education, and No. 17, fostering collaboration to achieve common goals. After the activity, participants took a group photo with the facilitators.

MALANG, July 12, 2024 — Wan Nor Dalila and Hawa Dalily, students from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, have completed their student mobility program at Biotechnology Study Program of FMIPA Universiti Negeri Malang (UM), which took place from May 12 to June 14, 2024. Their research project, “Characterization of Commercial Himedia Papain Enzyme,” directly supports sustainable development goals (SDGs) 4 and 17.
SDG 4 aims to ensure quality education for all, while SDG 17 promotes partnerships for the goals. Dalila and Hawa’s investigation into the Himedia Papain Enzyme contributes to SDG 4 by enhancing knowledge and skills in biotechnology, crucial for sustainable development. Their collaboration with Biotechnology Study Program of FMIPA UM exemplifies SDG 17, fostering international partnerships to achieve common goals.
Throughout their program, the students worked closely with experts at Universitas Negeri Malang, utilizing advanced facilities to analyze and characterize the Himedia Papain Enzyme. Their findings are anticipated to improve the enzyme’s application in biotechnological processes, aligning with global efforts towards sustainable practices.
